There are a lot of things that at one time I was a stickler on that I have now become a little more chillaxed. One of which my boys’ beds being made like twice in five weeks. What can I do? My kitchen floor has been cleaned like 3 times…though Em sweeps daily…if the health department came in at one point I think they would have shut me down. Oh well. There is one thing however I am still a stickler about…family dinners.
I don’t know why, but having dinner as a family is like a really big deal to me. Given Nathan’s late work hours I have had to juggle bath times and homework and such so that we can gather around the table together (or these days the kitchen island) at the end of the day, but to me it has been worth it. It is a huge struggle during sports seasons and there are nights Nathan isn’t home due to meetings as such. I can see why for many family dynamics and different seasons of life it would be impossible, but for the most part we eat together away from the distractions of technology with our long-standing rule of no electronics at the table.
I love that this concept is shown throughout scripture of how the Lord communes with His people around the table. We to this day gather around the communion table in remembrance of what Jesus did for us on the cross just as He did with His disciples the night He was betrayed in Matthew 26. And there is prophesy of the great wedding feast of the Lamb in heaven in Revelation 19. Maybe that has something to do with my passionate insistence we eat all together-?
I am so thankful that my husband and my children understand how important it is to me to eat together at the end of the day, and that they enjoy it as well. I love spending that time together as a family and talk about one another’s days and what is going on in each other’s lives. And this time of year doing our daily Advent study of Jesus’ family tree has been a focused time together in the Word and prayer. I love it! I am so thankful and holding onto it as long as I can!
